Southeast International: Motel Safety Precautions
Southeast International & Motel Safety
As a motel owner, one of your top priorities should be the safety of your guests. This will protect your customers from harm, as well as protect your best interest as a property owner. Nothing would be worse than a lawsuit that could damage your reputation, or worse, take down your business.
There are plenty of things you can do to ensure the safety of your guests, but here are just a few suggestions from Southeast International for new motel owners who are just getting started.
Safety Precautions for Motel Owners
Stay Up-to-Date With All Structural and Health Inspections
As a motel owner, you are required by law to maintain certain structural and health inspections to ensure the physical safety of your guests. It is vital that you remain diligent and make sure all inspections are completed in a timely manner each year. This will minimize the likeliness of guests being injured or getting sick as a result of a hazard on your motel property.
Keep Walkways Clear
Nothing screams slip and fall lawsuit like a walkway full of hazardous objects. Make sure your staff keeps any and all walkways on your motel property free of objects that may cause a guest to trip, slip, or fall down and injure themselves. This includes hallways, lobby areas, outdoor breezeways, courtyards, pool areas, and parking lots.
Take Precautions During Inclement Weather
Similarly, if your motel property is in a location that is subject to weather hazards such as slick ice, heavy rainfall, or large amounts of annual snowfall, make sure you are prepared with salt, snow shovels, and wet floor signage. You will want to make sure that your parking lots, interior flooring, and doorways are clear of ice or moisture that could result in the unintentional injury of a guest. Although you can’t control the weather, you still have a responsibility to maintain your motel property.
Install Security Cameras in the Lobby
You may also want to consider installing security cameras in your motel lobby, especially if your property is located in an area with a high crime rate. As noted elsewhere on the Southeast International blog, increased safety measures are one of the top-growing trends we are seeing in the hospitality industry, and your guests will feel safer knowing there are security cameras in main public lobbies and check-in areas.
Ensure Proper Signage During Construction
Whether your motel is undergoing a renovation or scheduled maintenance work, it is vital that you provide the proper signage for your guests. This will protect you from a lawsuit as well as protect guests from injury.
