Preventing Pests from Getting Into Your Hotel

Advice from Your Hospitality Brokers: Keeping Pests Out of Your Hotel

Pests in a hotel

Pests are the bane of hotel owners. If a guest finds a pest in their room, you can almost guarantee you’ll be getting a one-star review. There’s not much you can do to make guests feel good about staying at your hotel after finding pests. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make sure pests don’t become a problem in your hotel. Today in the Southeast International Hotel Brokers blog, our hospitality brokers offer some solutions.

How to Prevent Pests from Getting in Your Hotel

Our hospitality brokers recommend taking as many preventative measures against pests as possible, since it’s harder to treat a pest problem than it is to prevent one. The two primary pests you’ll want to keep out are rodents and bed bugs.

Rodents

The first thing you’ll need to do is check your hotels for any repairs that need to be done. Things like window screens, door strips, and other entry points around the hotel should all be checked. If anything is broken or torn, it needs to be taken care of. Make sure your automatic doors are programmed to shut quickly enough that rodents can’t sneak in.

You should also pay close attention to your landscaping. If overgrown bushes or trees are touching your hotel, these are ideal entry points for rodents. Make sure you keep landscaping trimmed and maintained.

If rodents do get into your hotel, the only thing you can really do is trap them or contact extermination professionals. While this isn’t ideal, it’s important to mitigate the problem as soon as possible. Also, you may be able to have the exterminators put some preventative measures in place while they’re at it.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are extremely problematic because it often isn’t the fault of hotel owners if bed bugs are found. Bed bugs can sneak in with guests who have their own infestation at home. Bed bugs can also be incredibly difficult to get rid of. The best thing you can do to prevent bed bugs is to keep your sheets and beds extremely clean, which is most likely already in your processes.

If bed bugs are found, make sure to have that room treated immediately and check nearby rooms to make sure they have not spread. Our hospitality brokers recommend telling your staff to keep an eye out for bed bugs when they clean the rooms. It’s much better for your staff to spot a problem than your guests.
